Jason Lake

Jason Lake, an artist from Florida, is currently in his second and final year of the University of Delaware

Master of Fine Arts Program. Jason’s primary medium is steel, although many found objects and

materials integrate themselves within his constructions. While painters have their collection of paint

tubes close at hand, Jason surrounds himself with a multifarious assortment of parts, and parts to parts.

Toys, electric motors, and unique thrift store finds are all pieces of the jumble. This artist embodies a

persistent atavism for the rhythmic design principles of the constructivists, while finding everyday

inspiration in machinery and architecture from the industrial age. As Jason builds, his wonky-logic forms

continuity between objects and materials. The resulting “wonkyisms” evoke a surreal humor, found

throughout his work.

Artist Statement

A compendium of classless doohickeys “boredly” mingle.

Non‐sequitur overtones of hurry up and wait are fed by the spoonful.

Cold‐call after cold‐call,

rejection after rejection,

my skin thickens.

I get on my own nerves.

Working myself into corners,

Some corners never found.

Constructions “freeingly” go awry, emerging unnullified to their surroundings

Trench Laundry

Luis,

Luis is his name.

Luis is in a war‐torn world.

Luis works in long‐term snow.

Luis has a laundry business.

Luis needed to survive.

Luis provided for his family.

Luis scrapped,

Luis scraped,

he even scooped.

Luis was surrounded.

Surrounded by dilapidated machines

and jettisoned equipment.

The frontline of the war seemed quite blurry.

It moved in a sea‐sickening sway,

rocking back and forth.

This sway, then that sway.

Then back this sway again.

Long term war torn world covered mostly in snow. This one-man laundry business was built out of necessity to survive and provide for his family. He leaves his family for months at a time, traveling from town to town and trench to trench. For a small price or equal trade, he cleans there dirty and mud soaked clothes, rejuvenating their spirits. For free he oers warm compassion and new uplifting stories of his travels. He sleeps on the top level of his snow vehicle next to a potbelly stove to keep warm. The sled he pulls carries all the laundry equipment and supplies. A small gas engine powers the washing machine and dryer. The dryer and water for washing are heated with a wood burning furnace. A small platform at the front of the sled is for folding if needed.
