Celsete Cooning

The M.F.A. painting program at University of Washington led Celeste Cooning to Seattle. A decade later, she is best known for creating large-scale, ethereal installations. Aside from various exhibitions, her work adorns city parks, storefronts, special events, and the stage. 2013 marked the transformation of Cooning’s signature cut paper aesthetic into a permanent outdoor sculpture through 1% for Public Art. Bounty functions as a threshold for Jackson Park Perimeter Trail in Seattle’s Pinehurst neighborhood. The stylized, ornate fronds harken to the verdant beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Cooning was the first Artist in Residence at Amazon Corporate with an installation in their Bigfoot building. More of the artist’s works are on view at Starbucks Headquarters, Theo Chocolate and Harborview Medical Center.

Artist Statement

A pervading interest in pattern and repetition led me to explore cut paper. The medium facilitates a particular response to material, shape, light, and space. My studio practice encompasses site-specific installations that inhabit public and private, interior and exterior spaces. Light actively engages the work with vivid color, reflective qualities, and dynamic, cast shadows. The pattern-based and sometimes ornate compositions, often begin as a series of hand-cut paper constructions and then transformed into large-scale installations that emphasize texture, rhythm, and light. These sensorial experiences are meant to provoke visceral responses. It is within these sensational moments that we become curious, hopeful and inspired.
