Ekaterina Smirnova, Winter, etching on paper

Ekaterina Smirnova, Winter, etching on paper

Ekaterina Smirnova

My fascination with snow and nature began when I was a child growing up in Siberia, Russia. As an adult, I started my research of snow in a more scientific way. I explore this natural phenomenon within my environmental art project "Frozen Waters". In this series of etchings, I am simply observing the elegant beauty of nature, under the cover of snow during winter months.

Ekaterina Smirnova is a Seattle based artist. She is highly inspired by science (astronomy, physics, and chemistry). Ekaterina's recent project, 67P, has been noticed by the European Space Agency (ESA), where she presented her work in 2016. The artist collaborates with scientists from around the world, interpreting their research into art. Ekaterina often travels, in the past few years, she went to art residencies in Japan, Ireland, Austria and throughout the USA. Ekaterina works in different media: large-scale watercolor paintings, ceramic sculptures, music collaborations, interactive electronics, and site-specific installations.

In 2016-2017 Ekaterina:
participated science symposiums: 50th ESLAB, DPS/EPSC, EGU;
had solo shows at ESTEC and 4Bid gallery (Amsterdam, Netherlands);
gave public talks at ESA and NASA; Institute of Low-Temperature Science of Hokkaido University, Japan.

Ekaterinaʼs work was presented at the World Science Festival in Brisbane, Australia.
